One of Rudolf Steiner‘s most astonishing achievements was probably the radical transformation of the idea behind the design of the first Goetheanum into a completely new design for the second building. While the first Goetheanum was still a rather inward-looking wooden building in which an attempt was made to make the content of anthroposophy an experience through art, after the catastrophic fire in 1922 the second building became an expressively designed concrete structure.
The concept for this building was first presented at the Christmas Conference in 1923/24. It was there that the General Anthroposophical Society was newly founded, the Foundation Stone Meditation was given as its spiritual foundation, the statutes were presented to the members as its social form and the School of Spiritual Science was established as its centrepiece. What is the relationship between the content of the Foundation Stone Meditation, the Society‘s statutes and the aims of the School of Spiritual Science and the living design of its architectural dwelling? They all arose simultaneously from the same source and the same spirit. Can we recognise this spirit in its architectural manifestations and read what messages and inspiration it still has for us today?
We will explore these questions through architectural observations, drawing, artistic exercises in various working groups and content-related contributions.
